Karen L Garwood

I'm a North Carolina artist who lives in Asheville surrounded by mountains. My work is a reflection of western North Carolina's beautiful natural setting. I'm painting more outdoors and enjoy painting majestic trees, mountains, rivers and waterfalls. Some of my favorite scenes are the many waterfalls in this area. My outdoor painting is an exercise in capturing a mood or feeling of the day.
When the weather doesn't cooperate, I paint still lifes that I set up in my indoor studio. Still life painting is a wonderful opportunity to paint seasonal flowers from many of the gardens in the area. Finding objects that relate and setting them beside my plants is a real challenge in experimenting with forms and light. I find the setting up of still lifes just as challenging as painting them. One of my goals is to enter my studio everyday with enthusiasm and just paint!!!
My style is realism influenced by impressionism. Having painted for many years, I have borrowed from both of these schools. Classroom experience, workshops, and shows have all been a part of my learning.
Pastels are a recent addition to my studio and I have developed a genuine fondness for this medium. I am constantly striving for creativity in my art and look forward to growth in knowledge, technique, and subject matter.
